About the Artwork

Watercolor

"I am grateful that watercolor was the first medium that was ever taught to me, by a teacher that I had when I was 7 years old... Watercolor forces spontaneity and it does not encourage great precision or worry about every little bit. As a teacher I try to make watercolor a high priority for my students. Watercolor is the first of what I call the 'Three Sister Media' (watercolor, reduction linocut and batik) because they all move from light to dark."

Linocut

"Reduction Linocut is a wonderful medium, because it's sort of like watching polaroid film develop, of course in a slightly longer time frame. Reduction linocut appeals to me, because like batik, it suggests what colors are good with each other in that with every new color rolled on, that new color is up against all the other colors. If one color doesn't work, just move on to the next one."

Batik

"There's a logical progression for me to move from watercolor to batik and then from batik to reduction linocut..."

"Every new color sprayed in batik is up against and outlining and surrounding the previous color and it really is an ideal way to work for me. It's really a luxury actually... You can't get that with oil painting or acrylic."
